Majority of employment creation in agriculture
A recent report highlighted by The Hindu has revealed that a majority of employment generation in India continues to come from the agriculture sector, underscoring the economy’s persistent dependence on farming for livelihoods.
According to the report, despite steady economic growth and expansion in sectors such as services and manufacturing, agriculture remains the largest source of jobs, particularly in rural areas. A significant share of the workforce is either self-employed in farming or engaged as agricultural labourers, reflecting limited opportunities in formal and industrial sectors.
The findings suggest that much of the recent increase in employment is driven by people returning to or staying in agriculture, rather than moving into higher-paying, productive jobs. This trend has been linked to insufficient job creation in non-farm sectors, forcing many workers—especially in rural regions—to rely on agriculture as a fallback option. Economists have noted that such employment is often informal, seasonal, and low-paying, raising concerns about job quality and income security.

The report also points to a rise in participation of women in agriculture, as well as increased dependence on family-based work. While this has contributed to overall employment numbers, it also reflects structural challenges, including lack of industrial growth and limited access to skill-based jobs.
Experts emphasize that while agriculture continues to act as a safety net for millions, long-term economic progress will depend on generating more stable and better-paying employment outside the farm sector. Without this shift, the reliance on agriculture for employment may persist, potentially slowing improvements in productivity and income levels.
